Welcome to View News

Mainstream media has existed long before the internet. Its role in the overall media landscape was established, known, predictable. The internet changed that completely.

The response to date has been to, “just add a website”. Duplicate content, in part or full to this new distribution medium, often reflecting the heritage of the respective organisation. Text and pictures for print, sound and vision for TV and audio for radio. Keep doing what you do, mostly as you’ve always done, but also put it on your website.

However with the internet also came convergence and flexibility, a medium not bound or limited to a subset of presentation formats, not bound by a delivery schedule, not limited by physical space, not limited to one way conversations, it could do it all, across a single delivery platform.

So what if you were to start a media company today without the legacy of the past, what would it look like, how would it work, how would it make a living.

These are all things that I and the team at View News is exploring. I don’t profess to have the answers, I don’t believe anyone has. If they did, then there would be no need for the myriad of articles written these days on journalism, media and its future.

So let’s experiment.

What if we start by challenging conventional wisdom? Do I really need a website? Can a news media organisation such as View News exist across the internet rather than on the internet, anchored in a central repository or website?

Let’s see!
