Biden Is Not the Answer

In a panicked race for the 2020 presidency, voters across America generally seem anxious to overthrow the orange authoritarian currently in charge. Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has been dressed up as the saviour of many. Electing the former Vice President may be what is required to reset the country. Nonetheless, it must not be lost in all the turbulence that Trump may be dangerous — but Biden is equally inadequate.

In the heat of a civil revolution that has engulfed America, the country is begging for a new-era president. An avant-garde politician in the mould of Theodore Roosevelt or John F. Kennedy — young and capable of enacting real change. Instead, the main challenger to Donald Trump, the 74-year-old incumbent, is Joe Biden: a 77-year-old who has been a politician since 1972. Call Mr Biden what you want, but you cannot call him a chance for change.

It is an uncomfortable truth that many have avoided that Joe Biden cannot save America. He will most likely barely make a difference at all. Biden stands for nothing. He is simply a puppet for whichever empty agenda suits his corporate backers — dressed up in a “moderate” package. In his case, moderate does not mean reasonable towards both sides of the argument but rather a commitment to nothingness.

A man who proclaims to Black Americans that they “ain’t black” if they do not vote for him cannot be much of a beacon of hope for racial advancement in America. He will not heal the divide, he will just paper over the cracks and hope nobody notices — much like most of his political career. The narcissism displayed to decide somebody’s race for them based on their voting preferences speaks volumes of a man whose political record on race has been blurry, to say the least. He strongly opposed desegregation of schools in the 1970s, and said that George H.W. Bush’s drug war aimed at minorities did not go far enough. In a society that is as racially divided than ever before, this is not the man to lead the US through disorder.

Mr Biden’s record on war provides no comfort either. He voted for war against Iraq in 2002. The former Delaware Senator’s powers did not stop there; he even chose all 18 witnesses in the Senate hearings on Iraq. Taking his power beyond mere words, the majority of these witnesses were pro-war, tilting the scales ever in his favour. Just an old politician doing old politician things — shady backroom dealings while the front room works *miraculously* to his benefit. If the American people wanted an anti-war Democrat candidate, they missed their boat with Tulsi Gabbard and Bernie Sanders. But in this election, the possibility of removing Trump is a greater priority than choosing a successor that the country might actually need. Well now, they’re stuck with Biden, a spineless veteran who is immune to real change.

His views on all matters, from racial issues to healthcare, have swayed in accordance to the wind: for Joe Biden does not have the heart or mind to make a difference on his own. Solely a politician for the sake of being a politician. Biden, like Trump, has faced several accusations of sexual assault throughout his winding and eventless political career. With countless talented and progressive politicians across the nation, the US has ended up with two extremely questionable finalists.

The dilemma facing American citizens is choosing between two morally bankrupt candidates. Having been caught up in a web of defeating Trump, the Democratic Party have tangled themselves in a web of total mediocrity. If the party had rallied behind a candidate who was wholly believed in, rather than one who “knows the game” — they might still have had an equally good shot at the presidency. Instead, it is now up to the American citizens to decide between a president they cannot stand, and a challenger they do not want. Enjoy another four unchanged years.
