Album cover of “WE DON”T TRUST YOU” by Future and Metro Boomin. Album cover from Epic / Freebandz / Republic / Boominati Worldwide

Future and Metro Boomin have been on a crazy run in 2024, dropping 42 tracks together–17 tracks on their project WE DON’T TRUST YOU, 18 tracks on disc one of their project WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU, and seven tracks on disc two. One project was much better than the other–WE DON’T TRUST YOU currently my pick for album of the year, while WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU, specifically the first disc, is hardly in my rotation at all. Anyway, here are the top ten songs from Future and Metro Boomin’s recent work, which was very difficult to rank, as these are some of the best trap songs in recent years.

Before the top ten, here are some honorable mentions: Ain’t No Love, All My Life, Cinderella, Claustrophobic, Nobody Knows My Struggle, We Still Don’t Trust You

10. GTA

A dark beat from Metro with some clean flows from Future is nearly always a recipe for success, and it definitely is for “GTA”. The way the instrumental builds up from the beginning of the song is fantastic and so is Future’s calm, nonchalant delivery. “GTA” may not be the craziest song on WE DON’T TRUST YOU, but the nocturnal vibe certainly makes it a highlight.

9. Magic Don Juan (Princess Diana)

The first half of “Magic Don Juan (Princess Diana)” showcases one of the darkest beats on the whole project, with a strange effect on Future’s vocals, making the song just a bit darker. The second half, while not nearly as dark and mysterious, is equally as appealing, as Future brings some energy with some incredibly catchy lines.

8. Crossed Out

“Crossed Out” may be Metro’s most chaotic beat of any song with Future this year, but it’s absolutely fantastic. There is so much energy radiating from this track, due to the epic guitars and wailing siren noise in the background. This chaotic energy is something that I wish was replicated on more tracks, as Future and Metro make it work so well.

7. Show of Hands

Here is where we get into the really good stuff. Honestly, this song and all the other songs higher on the list are basically interchangeable–it was nearly impossible to make this top ten. Anyway, A$AP Rocky has always been a solid feature artist, but this song proved how good a feature artist he can actually be. His hook is so catchy and carries so much personality, and he absolutely killed his verse where he threw some shots at Drake for “bagging” Rihanna when Drake failed to. Not to mention, Future has a great verse too and does a great job on the refrain.

6. We Don’t Trust You

“We Don’t Trust You” is a perfect album opener. Future provides two amazing verses over Metro’s calm and incredibly catchy beat, which switches to a loud, grand instrumental near the end of the track. The title track set the tone for what was to come throughout the entire album experience, as it carries an ominous vibe with a hint of upbeat energy, similar to the vibe of WE DON’T TRUST YOU as a whole.

5. Ice Attack

Like “Magic Don Juan (Princess Diana),” ‘Ice Attack” is a two-part track. However, the beat switch seems to hit harder on “Ice Attack” than it does with “Magic Don Juan (Princess Diana),” and harder than almost any Metro Boomin beat switch ever. Not only was the instrumental switch-up unexpected, but it genuinely added so much to the track. Not to say the first beat is bad–it isn’t bad at all. The vibe of the first beat is similar to the vibe of “GTA,” as their is a clear nocturnal atmosphere. However, the second beat has much more energy and personality, and Future’s hook and overall performance matches that energy perfectly, making “Ice Attack” a massive highlight on WE DON’T TRUST YOU.

4. Type Sh*t

“Type Sh*t” should absolutely be in the conversation for the best Metro Boomin beat of all time. Yes, that is a bold statement, but the instrumental of this track is really that good. The beat is built upon these church bell sounds–Metro took these noises and turned it into a trap beat, and it could not have turned out better. Future does a great job with the first verse, which leads to an, instrumental change and an amazing, psychedelic Travis Scott verse. As the instrumental switches back into the strange, phenomenal church bell sounding beat, Playboi Carti comes onto the track with one of his best features to date. “Type Sh*t” is truly a grand, semi-chaotic, trap banger.

3. Everyday Hustle

Unlike many of the songs on WE DON’T TRUST YOU, “Everyday Hustle” does not have a dark and nocturnal environment. This track is much more upbeat, but it’s still better than most tracks on the album. Both Future, Rick Ross, and Metro do their thing on “Everyday Hustle”, which is easily the most soulful song on the whole project/ There truly is not a bad thing to say about this track. There are beautiful background vocal samples engraved within the beat, Rick Ross provides some laser-focused and fantastic rapping, and the beat switch for Future’s last verse is also a huge highlight–one of Future’s best and most focused rapping performances on the album.

2. Young Metro

“Young Metro” is absolute trap perfection. From Future’s smooth, catchy, laid-back flow to The Weeknd’s incredible angelic vocals and Metro’s beautiful beat, “Young Metro” really checks off all the boxes. Even though The Weeknd did not have a verse or chorus on this track, his feature still adds a lot to the song. His background vocals on Future’s second verse are genuinely gorgeous, and elevate the track to the next level. Also, the grand synths that introduce The Weeknd into the song are so powerful. These synths mixed with The Weeknd’s vocals make me feel like I’m ascending into the sky. Outstanding work from Future, Metro, and The Weeknd.

1. Like That

The song that started it all–what else would be number one? Not only is “Like That” an incredible trap banger, but it’s a song that will be talked about for decades to come. Like “Type Sh*t,” this beat should also be in the conversation for Metro’s best beat of all time. The loud, chaotic horns mixed with the classic Metro Boomin trap flavor create an iconic instrumental. While Future’s performance is great, Kendrick Lamar is the real star of the track. “Like That” may be one of Kendrick’s best features to date, which is really saying something, as Kendrick has some of the best feature verses of this generation. During his verse, he disses J. Cole and Drake, which created a series of events which eventually lead to the Kendrick and Drake beef. Without Kendrick’s high-energy, aggressive verse on “Like That,” the fire would not have started and the beef would cease to exist.

So there it is, the top ten best songs from Future and Metro Boomin’s WE DON’T TRUST YOU, and WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU. Both artists are on a crazy run right now, and I can’t wait to see what they come out with next.
