We’ve been focusing on nutrition over the last week and it’s now time to look at the next part of your healthy lifestyle: exercise. Whether you go for a short brisk walk to the coffee shop or run a marathon, do intentional exercise everyday. You don’t have to do a hard workout everyday (in fact you shouldn’t), but just do something. CleanStart is all about building habits. Staying active is one of the most important ones.

Here are 8 tips on how to stay active:

  1. Walk everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you are new to exercising or an experienced gym rat, you will benefit from walking more.
  2. Ride your bike everywhere else. If you can’t walk there, and the roads aren’t covered with ice, chances are you can ride your bike there. Attach racks and other accessories to your bike to carry your groceries, golf clubs, surf board, laptop, and more. Of course, always use your best judgment and take every safety precaution.
  3. Hit the stairs. Whether it’s going up a few floors to your office, or hitting stairs for a serious workout, it’s a great way to get your heart rate up.
  4. Go hiking. It’s a great way to spend a day with your friends and family, see some beautiful scenery, and get your exercise points. If you’re feeling adventurous, put on a loaded backpack (full of delicious CleanStart snacks) for some extra effort.
  5. HIIT + bodyweight. HIIT (high intensity interval training) has fast become one of the most popular trends in fitness. HIIT consists of intense bursts of exercise, followed by recovery periods. It’s a great way to get your heart rate up and burn more fat in less time. The secret lies in the fact that your body needs more oxygen during a high-intensity workout, which creates an effect called Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, which burns more calories than a regular steady-state workout. Incorporate HIIT and bodyweight exercises for a super efficient, free workout option. Check out our Exercise guide for inspiration.
  6. Practice Yoga and Pilates. Improve your flexibility, strength and balance. Check out the different types of yoga and pilates available.
  7. Try kettlebells. This is a great way to get a full body workout. Make sure you go to a few training sessions before you do it on your own.
  8. Don’t forget to play! Hit the beach, play a game of basketball, play frisbee with your friends, go for a bike ride, hit the surf, and have some fun while staying active.

Basically, do whatever you want. Just do something! The happier you are staying active the more likely you will do it. So find something you love, and dive in.
