Why Founders Build Apps too Early

In many cases, founders are building apps way too early. The main reasons are:

  • To convince investors and potential cofounders.
  • To validate the business case.
  • To solve the problem for the customer and generate the first revenue.

As valid as those goals are, mostly building an app is not necessary to do any of those things. In many cases, the complete business case can be solved by e.g. performing the task for the customer manually, at least in part. Because of that, for many startups a smart move is to build a landing page, deliver the “product” as a service and generate actual numbers of actually paying customers — the result:

You’ll have actual revenue, a validated business case. And the best thing is: with those numbers, you can actually convince your investor of the market need of the product instead of simply showing something as trivial as the ability to build a product (which is usually easy, assuming you get an experienced partner on board).
