Greetings and thank you for taking a look at how I utilized the Virtru Platform to protect automated cloud-based workflows. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a technology that automates business processes through the use of software or “robots” that complete repetitive tasks on a computer typically performed by humans. Automation Anywhere is one of many Robotic Process Automation (RPA) providers on the market and their Community Edition was perfect for demonstrating this simple but effective way to protect sensitive data when automating workflows.

Goal

The goal of the Bot:

  • Encrypt all files in a predetermined folder
  • Add appropriate users to encryption policy
  • Upload encrypted files to a predetermined folder in Google Drive

Tools

Automation Anywhere

General Information:

  • The Control Room is a web-based only console
  • The Control Room creates bots
  • Bots run on devices
  • Devices are added to the Control Room Console via agents
  • The agents only exist for Windows (currently)
  • Automated actions on the Community Edition are limited

If you haven’t created an account already, please create an account.

  • Log into Control Room
  • Install Automated Anywhere agent on the Windows host
  • Create Bot
  • Run the Bot

For my example, my goal was to encrypt all files in a folder, add a user to the encryption policy, and upload each file to Google Drive. Once I run the bot, I check the Google drive and all expected files are there!

Conclusion

Most Virtru customers serve regulated industries such as healthcare and finance. RPA is a tool that can lower their compliance costs and exposure by automating simple workflows that are performed every day. The addition of Virtru data protection could help accelerate the adoption of these tools in the industries that need them the most.
