The thing about Numbers
by Tom Peruzzi
My Name is Tom and i’d like to tell you a story:
When I was younger, I got some good advice from my first CTO: “Your job is not about making billions, it’s about learning billions.” So I threw myself into work and, despite mediocre earnings, I learned like crazy and took every opportunity to work on projects and further my education. Years later, I’m a CTO myself, doing due diligence and still having a lot of fun with technology.
This story can be told by many other people in a similar way. But what makes a first job interesting?
- A good environment to challenge the status quo Experienced colleagues who can say more than „yes“, „no“ and „coffee“
- A good learning atmosphere that supports you in becoming an expert
- Challenging projects and demanding requirements
We at Virtual Minds offer more than that. We are one of the rare real big number companies in Germany, you want some hints?
- We run 400k QPS on average and more than 1 million QPS on peak on our platforms.
- We serve 99,9 % of the German real time bidding market.
- We run more than 50 billion requests every month.
- Our systems need to run stable 24/7.
- In addition, we perform GDPR-compliant calculations.
- In order to deliver in a few ms we run petabyte-sized memory databases.
In addition:
- We maintain a data-intensive distributed system.
- Our CI/CD systems enable us to deploy new versions within hours to production.
- We need to pay attention to performance on every level, because in our low-latency environment even O(n) feels like an eternity.
- We educate our own staff: Half of the leadership team started their professional careers at Virtual Minds.
