Dubai’s biggest mosque which can accommodate two thousand worshippers will officially open today in Al Safa area.

The opening of Al Farooq Mosque and Islamic Centre will be marked with Friday prayer.

The mosque and centre complex is spanned over 8,700 square metres and is inspired by the 17th century Sultan Ahmed Mosque (also known as Blue Mosque) in Istanbul, Turkey. The mosque itself is being built over 4,200 square metres.

Funded by Dubai-based businessman Khalaf Al Habtoor, the mosque was originally built in 1988 and then expanded in 2000. This year it was expanded further to become the emirate’s biggest mosque, catering Al Safa area and its neighbourhoods. The mosque is located just behind Emarat petrol station on Sheikh Zayed Road second interchange.

The mosque’s architecture is a mixture of Ottoman and Andalusian styles.

Dubai’s Blue Mosque will have a library with a collection of some 4,000 Islamic and other religious titles to help advance learning and a lecture hall that will be host to inter-faith dialogue to forge better religious understanding.
