Twitter is one of the most misunderstood social media platforms. In my own personal opinion, this is because when it first started people who wanted to use it in a similar fashion to Facebook would post statuses about everything they were doing, but they were limited to 140 characters when doing so. Over time that has changed, but most brands still don’t understand the importance of being on Twitter.

Twitter for Product Updates

Twitter itself has data that says 74% of the people who follow a brand on Twitter do so to get product updates. Think about what that data is saying. People will follow you on Twitter with the sole purpose of getting updates on product releases. This means if you are not on Twitter, you are missing a huge opportunity to inform an engaged audience about new products and services.

Twitter Drives Short-Term and Long-Term Sales

72% of Twitter followers are more likely to purchase in the future after following or engaging with a brand on Twitter. When someone seeks out a brand on Twitter it indicates an interest in their products or services. It indicates they want to connect with that brand by reading and engaging with their tweets, keeping that brand top of mind.

The research additionally shows that there is big monetary value to having Twitter followers. Adobe’s Social Intelligence Report reveals that revenue per visit from Twitter is $0.62. While this number is far below Facebook’s revenue per visit ($1.24), Twitter is still a significant source of traffic and sales.

Twitter Users Search for Discounts and Coupons

Knowledge tells us that most people follow a brand on Twitter to receive special discounts and deals. This is even more true for the coveted millennial market: a whopping 85% of millennials follow brands on Twitter for the coupons. Whether your target market includes millennials or not, offering exclusive coupons and deals can be a great way to drive engagement and sales.

Tweeting Increases Your Visibility in Search

Twitter recently announced that tweets will once again appear in relevant Google search results. Popular tweets from your brand could show up on the first page of search results. This will extend the visibility of your tweets and will ultimately lead to increased followers, engagement and click-throughs to your website.

Use Twitter for Customer Service

In today’s world where people are connected at all times, consumers are turning to social media to ask questions and give feedback to brands. It may seem counterintuitive to receive negative feedback in such a public forum, but it also gives you a place to showcase your commitment to customer service.
