When you venture into the world of blogging you will eventually come across people talking about guest blogging. It’s a confusing world at first with a ton of questions and today we are going to help you navigate the world of guest blogging.

What is Guest Blogging?

It’s a fabulous opportunity to take your own personal experiences and expertise and share it with an audience. It also serves as a unique opportunity to drive traffic to both your own personal blog and the blog that you are guest writing for.

Guest blogging serves as a great way to firmly establish yourself as an expert in whatever field that you choose and even gives you the opportunity to meet other bloggers who are passionate about the same topics that you are.

It can also be highly beneficial for you to bring guest bloggers into your world. They can add fresh perspectives and bring new insights to your existing audience. It’s definitely worth some thought.

How do I get started?

The very first thing that you will need to do is find the actual opportunities to be a guest blogger. There are a few rules of thumb when it comes to finding places to post so look for blogs that fit the following criteria:

  • Does the topic of the blog fit your area of expertise?
  • Is the audience a group who would actually be interested in this topic?
  • How many active readers are there?
  • Is the social media presence of the blog active?

If you are an expert in human resources you will want to find blogs read by HR people or business people or if you are selling the latest mommy product you’ll want to find blogs with an audience that is interested.

Where Do I Get Started?

The answer here is pretty simple. You’re going to want to start with Google. Check out some of these examples of what you can search to find guest blogging opportunities. Simply replace the word keyword with the topic that you are writing about.

  • keyword “submit a guest post”
  • keyword “guest post”
  • keyword “guest post by”
  • keyword “accepting guest posts”
  • keyword “guest post guidelines”

Any of these searches will take you directly to the blog owners submission guidelines, the submission page, or some examples of posts written by their other guest writers.

Okay, I’ve found where to be a guest blogger. Now what?

You’ve made it through the quick and easy part and now you have to pitch yourself to the owner of the blog. Get started with guest blogging by asking yourself this series of questions:

  1. What is the content of the blog? What skill level are the readers, etc?
  2. How do they write? Is it tutorials or long informative posts?
  3. Have you read their posting guidelines?

Answer these questions. Then, it’s time to start submitting posts.

There is a good chance that the first few posts won’t be accepted by the blog owner. Not everyone has the same tastes in content. Keep working at it because the rewards are great once you’ve been published and really start pushing out new content.
