Improving Access to Emergency Medical Services by Leveraging Cab Aggregator Platforms

Research and Design Project done as a part of submissions for 1st Semester — M.Des — Human Centred Design at Srishti College of Art, Design and Technology

India has the largest number of road-related deaths in the world. Every four minutes, one person dies in a traffic accident. Getting access to first aid and reaching the hospital in the critical first hour is crucial, otherwise not only lives are needlessly lost, but medical expenses become significantly amplified and patients can suffer lifelong problems such as limb amputation.

A reference image from TOI on call data related to medical emergencies

Our team decided to adopt a holistic approach while conducting our research. For the purposes of our primary data collection, we undertook several semi-structured contextual interviews of taxi drivers, ambulance pilots and Emergency Medical Technicians. During our field study, we documented our personal observations with capturing images and generating transcripts from our audio recordings.

Mindmap and Brainstorming

As part of our secondary research, we went online to look for blogs, articles, research papers and references to study ambulance systems, heavy traffic in cities, victim affected due to traffic jam and other related subjects. We mapped traffic congestion at different time intervals over a single route and compared that with peak hour conditions. Based on our findings and understanding of the stakeholders’ journey, we created personas and created storyboards.

Wire-frames

We came up with rough mock-ups of wire-frames, screen ideations, and design concepts. Then by using Adobe XD, we obtained hi-fidelity designs, which was the final screens, with system back-end journey, which shows the things processed beyond user screens.
