The work environment today is rapidly changing and requires a new dimension of leadership. Instead of relying on rigid authority and control, leaders need to embrace emotional intelligence and mindfulness. EQ and Mindfulness are two practices that can help leaders to cope with stress, improve focus, and foster creativity in their work. They can also help leaders to connect with their organizations, communicate effectively, and inspire positive change in their work. For women, this shift presents a unique opportunity to thrive, as they can leverage their natural strengths and skills in these areas. However, developing emotional intelligence and mindfulness can be challenging for many learners, including seasoned leaders.

“Mindfulness and emotional intelligence are not just nice to have, they are essential for any leader who wants to create a culture of trust, innovation and excellence. They help us to connect with ourselves and others, to manage stress and conflict, and to inspire positive change.” — Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post and Thrive Global

Mindful leadership is a powerful and secret weapon.

Mindful leadership is the key to balancing these priorities. Mindful leaders act with empathy, authenticity, vulnerability, emotional intelligence and learning agility. They are mindful of their thoughts, words, and actions. They plan and support their actions with intentionality. They inspire positive responses from those around them.

As a coach, I strongly advocate for a mindful leadership style, which emphasizes emotional intelligence. In my own practice, I have seen that many newly promoted executives find themselves out of their depth when faced with managing a large team. They assume that brain power alone will lead them to success, and they struggle as a result. A common pitfall for leaders is to isolate themselves from their environment and lead alone. This can lead to a lonely and stressful road. They end up micromanaging and second-guessing their team, which leads to confusion, lack of clarity, and exhaustion for everyone involved, including themselves.

Managing your thoughts Positively as Mindful Leader

Mindful leaders drive the organization to achieve its vision and mission with integrity and empathy. They are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of their team members. They foster a culture of learning, collaboration and innovation. They communicate effectively and authentically and listen to feedback and suggestions. They are adaptable and resilient in the face of challenges and changes. Mindful leaders are not only managers, but also mentors and role models and lead positively.

When something happens and you have a negative thought to the situation, catch yourself and think positive of the situation.

Pause, Reflect and Grow

Journaling your behaviors and actions can help you develop your EQ and become a mindful leader.

  • Reflect on how you think, speak, and act.
  • Forgive yourself for the mistakes you will make.
  • Invest time in improving and evolving as a leader.

Emotional intelligence and mindfulness are essential skills for leaders who want to create a culture of trust, feedback and action in their teams. By being aware of their own emotions and vulnerabilities, and by creating a safe space for others to express theirs, leaders can foster a positive and productive work environment. This is not only beneficial for the organization, but also for the well-being and growth of the leaders and teams in their organization.
