Evolution According To Juliette Clovis

French-based Juliette Clovis is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist, whose spectacular porcelain sculptures showcase beautiful women as hybrid beings — blended and ornated with myth and tales. Her works are tender yet strong stories that revolve around three main themes, the links between human and nature, the opposition between life and death and the dialogue between tradition and modernity.

Clovis is fascinated by the wild beauty of nature, she draws inspiration from the discoveries made on her many trips, to create her feminine masterpieces and to get closer to really understanding female identity in relation to nature.

For about a decade, Juliette Clovis has focused on female identity and the representation of women in modern society. In her most recent works, her women are completely transformed into a stunning mix of history, fantasy and chimerical dreams. The female bodies are invaded by a profusion of wildlife and flora elements, evoking a nature that is both soft and worrying.

The women subjects also appear to accept the invasion silently, with their eyes closed as if in a state of meditation or dream, embracing their new form rather than resisting it. These recent sculptures remind us of the fragility of life and highlight the beauty of femininity, while also revealing the power and complexity of nature in a stunning representation of life conquering life.

We find it seriously mind-blowing how Juliette Clovis’ work dances between a prophetic picture announcing the birth of a new living being, human body with a half-animal half-vegetable face; and the onset of death caused by an hungry nature wanting to take back its rights.
