The Creative Process

All art is a form of creativity whether digital, analog, on paper, on film, on wood, concrete, on a building, on the skin, it is entertainment, it is expression of self.

Mariam Webster defines art as “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings. Works created by artists: paintings, sculptures, etc., that are created to be beautiful or to express important ideas or feelings, and the methods or skills used for painting, sculpting, and drawing.”

There is no definition of what art is, other than the creative process unfolding from one person’s idea, or a group of individual’s collaborative ideas put together to produce something for another person or group of people to enjoy. How you choose to reflect that idea, or feeling is up to you. We are all created unique, from different backgrounds, different homes, different families, but art is a way of relating our differences to a common ground, communicating who we are, what we are, why we are, for others, with others, and to be observed and considered.

A favorite movie of mine is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 1971, because to me this movie presents some of the best representations of using and expressing creativity specifically through imagination.

Strong emotions, can be one of the driving forces to the creation of pure art. Additionally, an interesting comparison would be of the same scene re-created in Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

Through this recreation, it is obvious that there are differences between them. Both, however, are unique, creative, and artistic in their own ways. Creativity does not have to be completely original; it can be used and incorporated from other facets for other productions to build from and make something new.

Originality is something unique to an artists’ discovery of a new form of art, or the recreation of something in a different form. Books being made into movies might be considered a good example. Using creativity is much like the conservation of energy law in science. Energy is never created nor destroyed, it transforms from one form to another. Art is something that is not real, but a representation of the real. Art could essentially be considered in the vocabulary of artificial, a reflection of the real, but simulated. Art is recreated, but not necessarily remade.

Anyone can be an artist, if you have a desire to express yourself, and your interests on a topic in the news, in society, in history, in math, whether you realize it or not the way you choose to put on your shoes can even be a form of creativity!

“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” from Oh the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss
