How I Promote My Articles to Get More Views

Writing is only part of the equation

roducing quality work is very important to success. Unfortunately quality work will get you nowhere if nobody gets to see your work. Visibility plays a huge role in your success as a writer.

Someone once said that writers should spend 20% of their time writing and 80% promoting their work. It’s the need for visibility which has resulted in the creation of Facebook groups where writers can do so. If you’re not actively promoting your work, it’s time to start.

Apart from Facebook there are many other platforms where writers can promote their work. The ones I use are:

Pinterest

I have a board dedicated to my articles. I pin them on this board. I am also fortunate to belong to a large network of bloggers who allow members to share pins. There are pinning rules to be observed to stop people dumping. As long as you follow guidelines this platform works well.

Twitter

As soon as I publish an article I share it on Twitter. I got this tip from Tom Handy. I also tweet highlights from articles by other writers. It’s a fantastic way to connect with other writers on Twitter.

Instagram

You can’t share links on Instagram posts. To get around this I regularly update my profile link using my latest article. Other times I use the link of an article I want to boost.

Quora

I have had some success with Quora. Unfortunately the links don’t always load properly. I probably lose potential readers as a result. A strategy which seems to work better is uploading an image of the article, writing a paragraph or two about the article, and then embedding the link. It looks better and yields better results.

Atomgram

Atomgram is very similar to Instagram although there are differences. Atomgram allows you to share links in your posts. I try to post regularly. Like Quora, the links don’t always show up how I’d like them to so I upload images in addition to sharing the link.

Flipboard

I was late to the party with this one. Now I wish I’d started sooner. Well, it’s never too late and I’m glad I’m finally onboard. I created different folders (they’re called magazines on Flipboard) for topics I’m interested in. Once an article is published I flip it into the relevant magazine. I love this feature because it also helps me organise my articles. When you have articles published in multiple publications this helps you get an overview of what you have out there.

LinkedIn

I post links on LinkedIn as soon as the article is published. I works because when I look at my stats I can see that some of the traffic is directly from LinkedIn.

Google

This takes no effort at all. It’s thanks to the fact that Medium has such a high domain authority so articles automatically show up on Google. Other factors such as SEO, and popularity of the topic also play a role.

Many Stories

I recently joined Many Stories, thanks to an article by a Medium writer. I am still finding my way around the site. All I have done so far is share a few articles and connect with other writers. It’s been nice to see familiar faces too, so I feel right at home.

I will soon be adding Google sites to my list thanks to Manas Bhardwaj. You can read his article about how he did it here.

I know other writers use Youtube to promote their work. I am going to wait until I have perfected my videoing skills before I dive into this one.

So, if you want to see results for all the hard work you’re doing, get out there and gain some visibility.
