When a new technology emerges, Shopify, as a multi-billion-dollar ecommerce giant, must take their time to understand how it affects an ecosystem that services 1.7M merchants and their businesses. The purpose of the NFT Beta program was just so: collaborating with partners, like Vivid Labs, to understand how apps could be built to harness NFTs and how a select group of merchants might deploy them.

Initially, Shopify limited NFT app access to merchants in the premium Shopify Plus tier. However, this tier’s $2K monthly fee hindered many entrepreneurs from exploring NFT projects. A monthly fee is particularly difficult for NFT projects where it is customary to have NFT drops in various intervals of time, rather than having constant and continuous sales.

Recognizing this barrier, Shopify has expanded NFT app access to all merchants, including plans starting as low as $1/month.
