The arrival of the International Open Data Conference (IODC16) in Madrid this year was the perfect opportunity for us to bring together the whole vizzuality team and put on an event no-one would ever forget.

Here’s what happened.

4 amazing speakers told us their open data story.

Clockwise from top left: Miren Gutierrez, Director of Data Analysis at Overseas Development Institute, and Professor of Communication Studies at Deusto University; Yuri Engelhardt, Assistant Professor of Data Visualization and Visual Analytics at the ‎University of Twente; Aditya Agrawal from the Open Data Institute and Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data; and Sergio Álvarez Leiva, Founder and Chief Product Officer, CARTO.

30 data experts came together to learn and explore.

Outside Librería Desnivel, a bookshop that specialises in maps and travel books. The perfect venue for a talk on mapping data.

250 people joined together in a real life human data visualisation.

Yuri Engelhardt, Assistant Professor of Data Visualisation and Visual Analytics at the ‎University of Twente, designed and led the human data visualisation at Media-lab Prado.

We heard the case for open data and human-centered design.

CARTO’s Founder and Chief Product Officer, Sergio Álvarez Leiva.

We learnt more about the vital role open data and partnerships will have in the success of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Aditya Agrawal from the Open Data Institute and Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data introduced the Data4SDGs Digital Marketplace.

We saw a data visualisation on illegal fishing in the West Indies that was so compelling it prompted the Gambian government to ban overseas operations in that region.

Miren Gutierrez, Director of Data Analysis at Overseas Development Institute, and Professor of Communication Studies at Deusto University demonstrated the power of data visualisation with FishSpektrum.

We made time to talk and share some tapas.

There’s a little place near the CARTO office that we like to visit every now and then.

We left the conference room behind.

We may or may not have told some tall tales about the buildings being wrapped up in cloth to keep them warm over winter…

We loved every moment of it!

Our CEO Craig Mills felt like a rock star as he introduced Yuri’s human data visualisation from the balcony at Media-lab Prado

In fact, we loved it so much we’re going to do it again next year in Washington, DC!

Everyone from Madrid, Cambridge and Washington, DC. Together in one place.

Thank you!

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came, you made it so much fun. If you want to see more photos of the event, check out our Facebook page.

And finally.

We made a video of our journey to Madrid for IODC16 that we hope you will enjoy.
