Hello Porto!

We’ve opened a new office in Portugal.

Madrid, Cambridge, Washington DC and now Porto. Vizzuality has grown since Sergio and I founded our agency eight years ago. When we opened our first office, we wanted every day of our working life to count towards something meaningful. We wanted to work with people who measure their success in terms of social and environmental impact rather than profit. We wanted to wake up every day and feel excited by what we do; then go to bed having learnt something new.

Back then we squeezed four people around one desk but today we’re surrounded by a team of almost 40 people (each with their own desk) who feel the same way we do. As we open our doors in Porto, I’m excited to see who will join us as we begin a new chapter in our story.

We have plenty of space but we still like to huddle around one table and work together.

When I look at Porto, I see a city that inspires curiosity, beauty and thoughtfulness — qualities that guide us when we create maps and data visualisations. The people I’ve met are kind, generous and intelligent — just like the people we work with all over the world. What better place to find new teammates who are passionate about using their skills for good?

Our team weaves together a diverse group of climate scientists, data scientists, researchers, illustrators, designers, front-end engineers, back-end developers, and full stack wizards. We have teammates who used to be teachers, architects, marine biologists and DJs. Together we create things that go beyond our office walls, beyond the city walls, across forests and over oceans. Using all of our experience and expertise, we’re watching the world and finding better ways to connect people with the data and information they need.

Our new office is near Rua de Santa Catarina in the heart of Porto.

We connect different groups of people — citizens, scientists, companies and government — because we know the only way change can happen is if we work together. We do research, test theories, talk to people and make time for questions and answers. Everyone has the opportunity to contribute their ideas and every joke is good enough to share (usually). We’re proud of the fact we do things a little differently to everyone else and celebrate this whenever we get together.

I want every thinker, dreamer, doer and explorer in Porto to want to come and work with us. We’ve seen the creativity, talent and passion that overflows from your books, art, history and music — and we hope it finds its way towards us. Our door is always open for coffee and chats about our work, the places we visit, the bands we love and opportunities we offer. If you like karaoke, you’re in good company. If you want to take on new challenges and develop your skills while you do it, you’re in even better company. Come and say hello.

P.S. I’d like to take the chance to thank Simão Belchior and Laura Yebra for their invaluable help. The Porto office wouldn’t be a reality without them.
