Vlinder is excited to share the news of its Papariko mangrove reforestation project being chosen as one of six initiatives for participation in the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Accelerator. This program, led by WWF-UK and supported by the Climate Solutions Partnership, aims to establish pathways for NbS to achieve investment readiness.

With the backing of the NbS Accelerator, the Papariko project will refine its operational framework. This includes integrating commercial resilience with community livelihood development, enhancing stakeholder engagement models, strengthening monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and conducting carbon, biodiversity, and social baseline studies. This enhancement will enable Vlinder to scale its impact and replicate the approach in new regions.

For the Papariko project, Vlinder is partnering with Umita, an impact project management company from Kenya, and the Kenya Forest Service, to restore 1500 hectares of degraded mangrove areas in Kwale, Kilifi, and Tana River Counties in Kenya. Over the 30-year project period, Papariko will establish new habitats for biodiversity, create additional income sources for local communities, and contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration.

Vlinder fully supports the NbS Accelerator’s vision that NbS must become the “new normal” for investors and governments in tackling climate change, protecting nature, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
