Vocal Minority supports children caught in the family separation crisis
For the topic of Family Separation, Vocal Minority is announcing The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights as its July 2018 grantee.
Founded in Chicago in 2004, The Young Center is a human rights organization that fights for the rights and best interests of immigrant children. They provide “child advocates:” attorneys, social workers and bilingual volunteers who advocate for detained children throughout deportation proceedings.
Here’s why we chose The Young Center:
- Experience: They’ve been doing this work for over 15 years, and have earned the trust of government officials — including ICE — to help the children involved.
- Commitment: They stand side by side with the children they serve, even going so far as conducting social work visits in Central America to check-in on a child who is repatriated.
- Revenue: With a budget of just over $5 million*, they are relatively small and scrappy. They’ll need all the funds they can get to hire more staff to support the influx of vulnerable children in the cities in which they operate.
Today, The Young Center has offices in Houston, San Antonio, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., New York and Chicago, and are in the front lines in the battle to protect children in immigrant detention. We’re proud to be supporting their work.
You can learn more about The Young Center on their website or Facebook page.
