After the tragic losses of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, our community decided to take a broader look at the issue of suicide, searching for an organization addressing mental health and depression more systemically.

We were really impressed with Center for Youth Wellness, and are proud to announce them as our June grantee.

Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Founder and CEO of Center for Youth Wellness

Founded in 2012, the mission of Center for Youth Wellness is to improve the health of children and adolescents exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): traumatic events such as abuse, neglect, and family disruption. Medical science demonstrates that these events can cause permanent changes to brain architecture and immune function. Center for Youth Wellness seeks to change the way in which physicians — and society in general—recognizes, treats and responds to these children.

Here’s why we chose Center for Youth Wellness:

  • Scale of the Challenge: Over 34 million children in the United States are impacted by ACEs.
  • Approach: They combine clinical research and community work in a unique way.
  • Relevance: With family separation front and center this month, understanding the long term effects of the trauma introduced by separating children from their parents is critical.
  • Size: With an operating budget of less than $5 million, our grant will make a difference.
