When you think about Voi — what’s the first thing that pops into your head? Scooters, right? Physical scooters that let you transport yourself from A to B in a smooth and environmentally friendly way.

But there’s more to it! Under the hood, there’s all sorts of technologies that enable your ride. So you could say that our services are a (happily ever after) marriage between hardware and software.

In this blog post, we will deep dive into our tech stack, specifically our IoT hardware platforms and computer vision capabilities. For our Software tech stack read earlier posts on our blog https://medium.com/voi-engineering.

IoT Hardware Platforms:
Voi’s IoT hardware platforms play a crucial role in collecting data from the scooters and e-bikes and interfacing with the rest of the company’s backend systems.
Since 2018, we have engineered four generations of IoT hardware platforms, each designed to meet specific use cases.

Our latest and greatest platform takes inspiration from open source.. The IoT hardware runs Zephyr OS on an NRF-cortex M4 microcontroller and is connected to a wide range of peripherals, including GNSS, IMU, speaker and many more sensors. It also interfaces with the backend servers over the LWM2M protocol.

Computer Vision:
We are also investing heavily in computer vision technology to enable efficient parking, lane detection, and enable a myriad of safety features. Our computer vision capabilities are built into the scooters and leverage machine learning algorithms to detect and analyze various objects and scenarios on the road.

Collaboration with Vehicle Manufacturers:
Finally, it is worth noting that we collaborate with different vehicle manufacturers to develop our scooters and e-bikes. These collaborations not only ensure that our vehicles meet stringent local regulations and are certified to operate safely on public roads, but also bring the best user experience to our riders.
