Barbara Minishi is ready to embrace the moments in between–are you?
Listen. Feel. Notice.
This is a rallying cry, from artist Barbara Minishi, to all of us. The Nairobi, Kenya-based artist urges every viewer of her new collection, ‘Psalms of The Liminal,’ to take time in the in-between. Of course, that’s something that’s increasingly difficult to do these days.
Minishi produced the work, a series of 10 NFTs, out of a deeply personal moment: a career shift that took her out of her comfort zone into a new medium–but “felt like a homecoming,” she says.
As a Resident in the Voice x Women Rise NFT Residency, Minishi was tasked to produce a collection under a specific theme. She chose well-being and identity, both topics which come to life in the video montages she produced; layered work that includes photography, collage, and audio.
Put simply, “Psalms of the Liminal is a celebration of what we undergo when open to change in our lives,” says Minishi. “My liminal period is a powerful, potent time of learning, unlearning, exploring and experimentation. This collection is a reflection and embodiment of that.”
For those of us new to the concept of a liminal moment, let’s break it down. Minishi defines it as a magical, alchemical space between the known and unknown–a time where you are moving with mystery and surrender. It comes with both timelessness and possibility.
The past few years have forced transitions on everyone. Whether you physically moved, changed jobs, mourned a loved one, or felt lost, you may have experienced the liminal–making Minishi’s collection universally relatable.
Do not let an idea of an identity stop you from showing up fully in your power. Inhabit your true identity, and nourish your wellbeing. We all need each other.
As for the artist, she may be emerging from a period of change with this stunning collection, but she’s not done yet. She hopes you feel an openness to accepting what may come your way: or, “the beauty of feeling tethered back into life when you are willing to risk transformation in your life.”
