An Open Letter to Donald Trump

Dear President Trump,

Hello! My name is Jenily Garcia and I am a 9th grade student at Summit Shasta High School in Daly City, California. One thing that I love about my life is being Latina. The music, food, people, I just love everything about it. Nobody can take that away from me. Nobody. I wanted to write to you, specifically, because as a young American citizen, I know what you want to accomplish. You want to build a wall between the border of Mexico and the United States. Even though I am not Mexican, I still do not believe it is necessary to build one. This wall should not be built due to how expensive it is and immigrants wanting a better life.

For starters, building the wall is expensive and instead of using that money on it, you can use it for making citizens’ lives more successful. According to the article “How Much will Trump’s Border Wall Cost” from cbsnews.com, Rebecca Shabad argued that, “That wall that President Trump has vowed to build along the U.S border with Mexico could cost more than $21 billion.” You are willing to waste all of that money on a wall on a 40 foot high wall? I am not trying to be disrespectful, but if I were you I would use all of that money on education, supporting those in needs, and helping these immigrants getting a better life. Also, spending your money on a wall that will most likely get knocked down is a waste of your time.

Furthermore, building a wall and not letting immigrants enter America is not making America great again, but rather worse. These people want a better life. According to the article “Are Hispanics Finding a Better Life in the U.S” from theatlantic.com, Gillian B. White stated that, “Immigration to the U.S. is, at its heart, about one thing: the search for a better life — the search for better safety, work, and education, for the immigrants themselves and for their children and their children’s children.” In my own experience, I know that this country is made up of immigrants, especially from Latin America. These people are coming in for a better life and as President, you are not taking action to support them. Instead, you are pushing them away. This is the only thing that Hispanic immigrants want: a better life. In fact all immigrants from different countries want a better life, especially if they have children. We, the children are the future, and our parents know for sure that they want us to have an education so we can have a successful life.

While some might agree with you saying these immigrants are worthless, drug users, and uneducated, this idea is not true because if we did not have immigrants, our country would not have different culture such as African American, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Asian. America is a diverse country that needs to stick together and support each other. We all came together to this country to learn how to respect and love one another. Not only that, but the majority of our employed workers are non-American Citizens. Without all of their work, we would not have schools, homes, practically anything. For all these reasons, I would like to offer a solution: instead of building a wall, use that money for supporting those in need or for education. In addition, I hope that you will consider what I am offering to you. As president, it is your job to make America great and building a wall is not making this country a better place. This will make a difference because it is more important for us to get education and support one another instead of keeping Latinos from Mexico or other countries entering our country. America is suppose to make people’s lives better.

I appreciate your time and letting me tell you how I feel about this situation.

Sincerely,

Jenily Garcia
