An Open Letter to Donald Trump
Dear Donald Trump,
My name is Nicolas. In my English class, we have been working on a project about the U.S. getting involved in international conflicts. In this project, I have been learning about war by reading articles that my teacher has provided.
It seems like war is constant; there are always wars somewhere. Currently, we are facing conflicts with North Korea who have launched several test missiles. We are also facing the challenges of protecting ourselves from terrorist acts by radical ISIS and others. Our project asks us to consider the essential question, ”should the U.S. get involved in international conflicts?”
Through this project, I have heard many people argue about the cost of lives in war, and that new weapons are always developed to take more lives. I wanted to write to you, specifically, because I believe that more funding should go to technological development agencies that can find new ways of protecting our soldiers lives. With constant wars, we are losing many lives of soldiers and we need to do more to protect them. This is important because the loss of a soldier’s life also hurts their family and friends. If it is possible to minimise the casualties, it would greatly benefit the morale of our nation and reduce the cost of war in lives lost and hurt. Dangerous environments can also hurt soldiers which will effect them in their civilian lives. A former specialist in the Arkansas Army National Guard named Nicholas Johnson said himself “I can’t get a good job now because . . . I have to be upfront and say I have this disability, I have a tore-up back.”
Some might say that we are already investing a lot of money into the military and we don’t have the money to invest more. I would ask those people, how much money is a person’s life worth? And can we afford to continue to send soldiers into wars and continue to lose their lives? These are the people who make the greatest sacrifices for our nation and for the freedom and liberty that we, as a nation, can enjoy. We, in turn, owe it to them to do whatever we can to protect their lives.
For all these reasons, I would like to offer a solution: Make protecting the soldiers life a priority and invest in technologies to save their lives while they are fighting. Technologies such as drones which could be sent in for surveillance or to send in crucial supplies to soldiers in the fields should not be minimized, and be invested in so that they could be even more effective.
While this is a serious problem, more investment in research in further developing such technologies might be an action we can take. This will make a difference because the cost of human lives are too high. Not only do we lose the life of the soldiers, but it also devastates the lives of their families that have been waiting for them to come back home. People of our country will lose our morale as we lose more lives to wars. We should do everything we can do minimize that.
I appreciate your time, and consideration of my proposal.
Sincerely,
Nicolas
