War Speeding is Profiting Larger Corporations
Dear, War
Hello, my name is Lucy Smith, I’m a student at Summit Shasta a charter school in Daly City. In my English class, we have been completing projects about the US intervening in international conflict and war as a whole. In this project, I have been analyzing the issue of war by reading articles, short stories, and holding Socratic seminars on war. Our project asked us to consider the essential question, should the us intervene in international conflicts.
I wanted to write to you about war but specifically about The problem regarding American economic systems profiting from war. An article “Why America Needs War”, by Jacques R. Pauwels, the author writes “IBM, for example, increased its annual sales between 1940 and 1945 from 46 to 140 million dollars thanks to war-related orders, and its profits skyrocketed accordingly.”This quote suggests that larger companies like IBM are profiting from the war, while others are suffering. This also suggests that people and companies would rather have more money than worldwide peace/ no war. Later in the same article, readers read America’s wealth is profiting from war. When the author writes, “The America of wealth and privilege is hooked on war, without regular and ever-stronger doses of war it can no longer function properly, that is, yield the desired profits”. This example reveals if there was no war there would be no profits from it. This suggests people with companies are most likely not willing to stop war because of the profits war provides. from article “How Companies Profit from War” by john doe An example of profit from war include the “Shoddy millionaires it was reported that they “sold recycled cardboard shoes and recycled wool to soldier that occurred during the American Civil War.” other organizations profit great from military spends in the United States are organizations that sell weapons, uniforms, oil, and other warfare materials.
To close off, the idea that America‘s wealth is profiting from war is not right and these companies should find profit from more humane actions than war. This would allow for a more suitable life for all, not only the selfish corporations that make our situation worse because of money.
Sincerely, Lucy Smith
