I am a high school student and my project is about sleep. Drowsy driving is responsible for 1,550 fatalities and 40,000 nonfatal injuries annually in the United States. And this is linked to loss of sleep. People in this world need sleep and it shows. What I am trying to accomplish is, how much sleep does a regular human being needs. So I wanted to find perfect amount of sleep because too much sleep can lead to problems and too little can lead to insomnia. This will help me become a better citizen because I will start to become a better person with more sleep as I will have more energy and I will feel better the next day. I will conduct an experiment counting which hours are the best for myself. Such as one night I will have no sleep and see what happens the next day. Then, I will have one night of a lot of sleep and see what happens again the next day. I will be writing this data down on a sheet or document. This plan will ensure the successful completion of my project because each night I will do different amounts of hours. My final product will be a poster of all my results and data from this sleep experiment.

Imagine what would happen if we could never close our eyes to let our brains rest? This week, I made progress by collecting data for my experiment and also further researching about what my topic is. The most striking I learned is that after getting one night of basically almost no sleep, I was extremely grumpy the next day during school. First of all, people in High School need sleep and it shows because everyone at my high school seems tired all the time. I learned this when I started losing sleep too and noticed how everyone else felt when they had no sleep which was very grumpy, depressed, and sad. This lesson helped me to be more successful because it helped build more habits to get more sleep as at some days I got more than 10 hours of sleep which had me feeling great the next day. Compare to some other days how I slept less than 8 hours and I felt grumpy and tired the very next day. First of all, loss of sleep can also lead to a numerous amount of health problems. I learned this when I started finding more research and it showed that sleep deprivation can lead to all heart related problems. Some of these include heart disease, heart failure, heart attack, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes. I am glad that I chose this topic because before this experiment because this is encouraging me to sleep earlier than I usually do. If i didn’t choose this I would not have had the amount of sleep I have now because I am changing my ways. Also I feel like my days the next day after getting a good amount of sleep are good because I feel very energetic and not grumpy and sad. Overall, I feel relieved I learned the risks that are happening when I do not have the amount of sleep I need.

Sunday- 6–7

I almost slept over this time but I made many timers on my phone to ensure I wake up on time. When I woke up it did not feel like a new day and felt like I didn’t even get sleep at all. Right when I woke up I took a shower, I thought this was gonna wake me up but when I finished I felt even more tired. Since it was Sunday I had to go to church, at church I almost fell asleep because sometimes church can feel like an eternity sitting plus me getting barely and hour of sleep. As the day went on I was very very tired and my body was very fatigue.

Monday- 4–7

It was very hard trying to stay awake until 4 but I did it. I always felt like really knocking out from around 1 to 4 am. When it hit 4 I finally knocked out. It was very hard waking up at 7 and I woke up at the very last timer at 7:05. I still felt tired but it was relieving I got more sleep than the night before. But, I had school today and even my regular sleeping schedule isn’t sufficient enough everyday. As the day went on during school I was very very tired and almost fell asleep. My best friend this day was Pure Leaf sweet teas keeping me alive during the day.

Tuesday- 2–7

This week felt like the longest week of my life and this was a bad time to conduct this experiment because so much was happening in my classes this week. But, when I woke up I felt really good for some reason and felt like a regular day.

Wednesday-12–7

This is what my usual sleeping time is and when I woke up I felt pretty average and regular. As the day went on it felt like a regular school day and I did not feel that tired. I was very happy this day and I could focus in class.

Thursday- 10–7

I have not slept this early for a year or two and I was honestly looking forward to sleeping this early because I need to build a habit of sleeping earlier. One difference I found in this day compared to the others was that I felt more loose, it might not make as much sense but my body felt more loose and relaxed . I feel like this should be my ideal sleep time.

Friday- 8 -7

It was kind of hard sleeping this early but I did many activities earlier to make me try to sleep this early. I have never slept this early in my life. I feel like the earliest I have slept is 9 and that was a long time ago when that used to be my bedtime in elementary school. I kept on waking up at around 1 and 2 but I still fell asleep. When I woke up at 7 everything felt weird and odd for some reason. As the time went on I felt too energetic to the point it felt uncomfortable. My sleep was comfortable though, but it felt like i was sleeping and laying on my bed for way too long.

Saturday- no sleep

This was just a very bad day. I was tired the entire day and felt so sluggish. I had a very bad headache this day and felt like passing out at times.

You may wonder why I am wearing pajamas right now? This is because I will be telling you guys about my sleep experiment

My passion project is about sleep. I noticed that I never get as much sleep as I should and I chose this topic to help me find the best sleeping hours. People really need sleep because it can lead to many health problems and can affect your mood negatively the next day. Especially in high school where many students lack the proper amount of sleep due to studying or schoolwork. What I did was for one week I slept different of hours of sleep each day and wrote how I felt the next day of there were any similarities and differences.

Teenagers need sleep because the lack of energy can lead to problems in class and negatively affect their mood and having energy can make the person more positive and happy.

Lack of sleep can negatively affect your mood and your attention span in school.

  • Monday morning — 4am-7am
  • It was very hard trying to stay awake until 4 but I did it. I always felt like really knocking out from around 1 to 4 am. When it hit 4 I finally knocked out. It was very hard waking up at 7 and I woke up at the very last timer at 7:05. I still felt tired but it was relieving I got more sleep than the night before. My best friend this day was Pure Leaf sweet teas keeping me alive during the day.

This was monday morning before school started, I slept for 3 hours. I stayed awake until 4am and woke up at 7am. After this night I can conclude that getting sleep for 3 hours is not a good idea for anyone. Based on my results, do not get sleep less than 10 hours because this can have a negative effect on your mood the next day and also you will not be able to be productive in any way at all.

Based on my data, we can conclude that getting less than 6 hours of sleep can lead to many negative effects the next day.

Getting enough sleep can be beneficial to your everyday life.

Thursday- 10pm-7am

I have not slept this early for a year or two and I was honestly looking forward to sleeping this early because I need to build a habit of sleeping earlier. One difference I found in this day compared to the others was that I felt more loose, it might not make as much sense but my body felt more loose and relaxed . I feel like this should be my ideal sleep time.

This was Wednesday night to Thursday morning before school. I got 9 hours of sleep which was the most at that point as the days before I was getting 7 hours and below which was terrible for me because I could not focus at school and constantly had headaches throughout the day. Based on my research, I would suggest getting at least 10 hours of sleep per night because personally I feel like getting less 9–10 hours of sleep will cause mood swings, also when I got around 11 hours for some reason I still felt tired which was odd and also I felt uncomfortable once waking up. When I was at school after sleeping 9 hours I felt more focused and engaged in the activities going on during the day, also I felt happy and energetic.

We can conclude that getting the sufficient number of hours of sleep can prove a healthier lifestyle.

I want the people to create the habit of getting the right amount of sleep and sleeping early. I want you guys to remember all the negative effects of getting no sleep.

Sleep is a fundamental part of having a healthy and happy life, if you listen to what I say I guarantee you will have a good life.
