Last week, Patrick Thompson posted a request on Volley looking for help finding a large building in Toronto for the purposes of a public art mural. The mural was to be painted by young artists from Cape Dorset that Patrick and his non-profit were sponsoring. He and his team were in a tight spot because the owner of the building that had previously donated a wall backed out at the last moment.

What happened next is an amazing example of how helpful and human the internet can be.

  1. First, Patrick created his request on Volley.

2. Not long later, Volley members started replying to Patrick’s request, offering connections and sharing photos of walls they were willing to donate.

3. Other people volleyed Patrick’s request to people in their network who they thought could help. Patrick was connected to city councillors, building developers, store owners, and local architects.

4. While many people reached out to help, one Volley member’s reply in particular stood out. Ilya shared a photo of his building and included the dimensions of it. Patrick visited the building site the next day.

5. The outpouring of support resulted in Patrick landing a building, which is even better than the one they previously had 😀

Painting begins shortly. You can follow the progress on Instagram @thepasystem. You can help others like Patrick and create requests of your own on Volley.
