If you’ve ever walked through the forest at Volta (our cleverly-named and painted hallway with the startup unicorn — yes, unicorn), you have probably been greeted by a Yoda poster with the motivational quote: “Do or do not, there is no try”. Well, this year, there’s a lot for YOU to do at Volta, and it’s all very exciting. So, in true Yoda-like fashion, let’s take a peek into what the future holds…

Bigger, better, faster, stronger

In the startup world, growth is a key indicator of progress. Everything about Volta is growing too! Our staff, number of members, resource library, and eventually our entire headquarters are all expansions that lie just on the horizon.

With 500+ network members and over a dozen resident companies, we are continuously expanding our reach. For example, only a couple of weeks ago, Jesse Rodgers, Volta’s CEO, offered up his personal office space to allow for expansion. We are all about supporting growth however we can.

Startup Empire is back!

Startup Empire, the super-awesome, growth-oriented, startup conference is back this year, and it’s something you won’t want to miss! This isn’t your run-of-the-mill, “feel good” conference. Real entrepreneurs will be giving you the real deal, struggles and all, on how they overcame challenges and achieved success.

This year’s theme is, How to survive when you’re strapped for cash, and how to grow once you have funding resources or revenue. This is something that virtually every startup can relate to, and promises to be jam packed with valuable advice.

Stay tuned for speaker announcements!

Plenty of awesome events & guests, you say?

This one goes out to all the ladies out there

Women are underrepresented in the tech community, but we want to change that. This is why we offer accessible training in an environment designed for women, where they can learn necessary technical skills and make connections.

Women Taking Over the World with Tech

Women working in the technology industry are invited to meet and learn useful skills that will give them the upper hand in the industry. Training, networking opportunities, and mentorship are all part of the package. Find out if this is right for you!

Ladies Learning Code

Volta partners with Ladies Learning Code’s Halifax chapter to offer coding workshops for all skill levels. While, not exclusive to ladies, these events are suitable for even coding beginners. Our only expectation is that you know how to open up a web browser and do something online like checking your email. (But if you’re reading this, we’re pretty sure you know how to do that.)

Gain skills in:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • WordPress
  • Python
  • Ruby
  • Web design and more.

We didn’t forget the kids…

We want entrepreneurship to start early. That’s why offering programs to teach coding and business skills to kids are essential! By doing this, we’re inspiring the next generation of founders.

Scratch Days

Children ages 8 to 12 (along with a guardian) use Scratch, a programming language and an online community to create games and hone their programming skills.

Hoist

Hoist is a tech club for teens aged 12 to 17 interested in coding, design or entrepreneurship. The goal of Hoist is to foster young entrepreneurs and to provide them with skills to build and scale their technology startups. Hoist brings together teens with varied skill sets and similar aspirations, enabling them to build founding teams with strong capabilities.

Kids Learning Code

Organized by Ladies Learning Code, these workshops are beginner-friendly, hands-on and fun. Kids learn basic coding skills in a variety of languages, giving them the basis for a future in technology.

Digital Discovery Camp

Over March Break, Volta partners with Digital Nova Scotia to welcome young students to talk to resident founders about their technologies and ask them questions first-hand.
