There’s no better game-engine than Unity!
OK, so I’ve got your attention. What I really meant was there’s no better engine than Unity… for us.
At the moment, anybody with a dash of imagination or who knows their way around a desktop computer, can (in theory) build the next big thing in computer games. All they need is one of two engines: Unity from Unity Technologies or Epic’s Unreal Engine.
Most online debates focus around these two engines. It’s Unity vs Unreal. Which engine will power my massively multiplayer online (MMO) game? If it were up to me, I’d probably back Unreal. But that’s not why I’m here.
I’m here to talk about interactive experiences, and that’s where I change sides and back Unity. Me and my team at Volume .iX create 2D or 3D immersive experiences for single and multiplayer users in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), or just ‘real reality’ — all on desktop, mobile or tablet.
Don’t get me wrong, the stuff we create isn’t first-person shooters, but it’s still pretty cool. A typical contract might involve developing a 3D model in augmented reality to explore different benefits of a new fuel-injection system developed by a leading car manufacturer.
It could include interactive elements where employees can learn how to perform everyday tasks in dangerous environments (without the danger, of course) using VR.
It might simply consist of a 360 video experience through the human brain at a molecular level — for deployment on YouTube.
The client also wants the App’ to be distributable over mobile for use with Gear VR.
Unity is the perfect tool for our clients’ needs — partly because of how easy it is to deploy, but mainly because it supports multiple devices like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream, Microsoft HoloLens and more.
It also focuses on the end-user experience rather than the technology needs, which ticks big boxes for us. Unity offers a load of standard or downloadable assets — giving us creative freedom without expensive design and development costs.
Oh, and one more thing on Unity. When it comes to creating AR, Unity offers out-of-the-box support for arguably the leading software developer kit (SDK): Vuforia. For us, this means we can create and deliver a working prototype in a matter of hours, rather than days.
Sure, this sounds a little salesy (I wish I was paid to write this!), and of course, other engines have their own strengths. But believe me when I say this; because of its diverse features and flexible deployment options, there’s no better engine than Unity (for us!).
