Volume(UP) #8
“Back And Better” ?
S: We are back from our self-imposed hiatus. In that time, the world found new ways to knot itself senseless. On the bright side, there have been protests against systemic oppression around the world, the “home of the brave” is having intermittent booty calls with the fine lady Rona, some of our faves were exposed as lawless, abusive (alleged) rapist fucks, Armz Korleone is still buff as fuck. What else? 😉. We struggled and found peace to bring slappers for your head top (actually cheeks and feet but let’s keep it PG 13). In this issue, I choose to focus on the artistes (rather than the music ). I feel music as an expressive art form is a piece of their souls, they share and i hope these picks will result in a healthy following of their past and future works
Starting off with Leon’s “ Lost Time”, the intro to Leon 😉 where she plays the goddess of unrequited love. This song sets the tone for the storyline of the album. A timeline of a situationship. I think the album an interesting piece of work, the one before the master piece.
Preye’s “Man in the Wind” is a thought provoking “rhetoric” on the state of our communities and the ever resent struggle between the haves and have nots. The writing makes me happy and I think its genuinely wonderful. Unfortunately, Spotify and Deezer folks would have to wait to enjoy this. Three Points for Apple Music.
No Bondage is the best engineered live recording I have heard in a while. I hope “Jesus Music” doesn’t rub you the wrong way for your own sake.
Sarkodie, my fave (living) Ghanaian artiste, gave us “Oofeets”. Shout out to Dj Cuppy’s radio show Africa Now for this discovery. Noa Kirel, has a tik tok bop (Million Dollar) that I love. I have no idea what the song means. It’s probably something to do with the love she is getting from US execs.
RNB!!!
(Also Known As) can be interesting when he isn’t being a hateful SOB. He cannot make the list because he is cancelled but find it here or preview it here.
Pretty Boy’s offering with Olamide is being slept on IMO. Big Love to Olamide for his Alté(ish) offerings this year.
Kabza De Small takes the cake for me on this issue. I have spent the past fortnight in Amapaino land where he is king. I have so many questions. What is his process ? How does he manage to collaborate with all the one billion artistes ? Who does he think he is putting Wizkid, Burna and Casper on one song 🤯???? Best believe I saved the best for the last.
Music (in my uneducated opinion is Africa’s finest (intellectual) export. It’s a brilliant exhibition of the African’s soul. On this hopeful and audacious note, we wish to begin a series of “ Day Trips”: colorful music from places on the continent, with our “Take a Day Trip” playlists. The first is getting S.A love by the way. It can be found here. Till next time, enjoy and share with friends.
XOXO.
T: This hiatus was needed but I’m glad we’re back. The most incredible thing for me was seeing the demand for what we do. I’m glad you guys enjoy what we do. It’s not easy curating this playlist but this love keeps us going.
This playlist includes 3 songs from Sy Ari Da Kid. I was introduced to him with the Read Receipts song. Now the version on this playlist is a new version with another talented Don, Eric Bellinger. And I prefer it. R&B dudes singing about being dickheads is my shameless bag. So I endorse this kind of behavior (when the music is this good). Not every time begging, sometimes badly behaved dickhead. His new album, A Toxic Heartbreak, is really nice too. Check it out.
We need to talk about DJ Spinall’s ear for great Nigerian Pop, guys. He should have a job at one of these labels that are trying to penetrate the African market. I’m saying this cos Tonight is a terrific song. Omah Lay knows what he’s doing. This is his best song for me, for me. I don’t know how involved Spinall was but it’s a thumbs up from me for helping to craft this song.
6LACK’s ATL freestyle is a display of ability. He’s so consistent. He doesn’t have bad songs. Elevator girl is on here cos Shura & Ivy Sole showed up. It’s puts me in a mood I like so much. I also sprinkled some Kenny G on here cos why not?! Sadé by Trey Wavey is a slapper man. That’s all I can say.
Anyways thanks for sticking with us even through the hiatus. I enjoy doing this for you guys. See you next week.
