Starting Five: July 5

Start every week with VPCo.’s Starting Five, our favorite highlights from the last week in sports.

  1. A number of football clubs in Europe have raised jersey prices for supporters for this upcoming season. While shirts only cost £8 (~$10.17) to make, they typically sell for around £80 (~$101.70).

So who gets what percentage of the £80 from the sale of a shirt? Daily Mail broke it down. See below for more.

2. There’s no denying that hot dogs are a July 4th staple whether they’re at your own cookout, a baseball game, or at the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. And hot dog condiments are always a hot topic.

This year, Pepsi decided to create their own with the introduction of “Pepsi Colachup,” available at select baseball stadiums on July 4th.

Would you put this on your dog?

3. IBM tested the use of AI commentary during the Masters a few months ago. It must have been somewhat of a success because AI is now being used for another premier sporting event: Wimbledon.

IBM watsonx will be used to generate commentary for video highlights on the Wimbledon app and website.

How far away are we from AI calling the NBA Finals?

4. The Famous Group and Tagboard have teamed up to bring fans’ Twitter, TikTok and Instagram photos, reels, hashtags or posts to in-venue jumbotrons.

The partnership will see fans’ social media content displayed in a 3D environment during different MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL games.

Check out the article below to learn more about the technology and how it works.

5. Wimbledon teamed up with Fortnite to bring Race to Wimbledon to video gamers around the world.

Fans can race against Andy Murray to Wimbledon’s Centre Court and then enter to win tickets to the Gentlemen’s Singles Final upon completion of the race.

This isn’t the first time that Wimbledon and the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club have used video games to connect with the next generation of fans and it likely won’t be the last.

Until next time, best swishes.
