WHAT MAKES OUR SKIN DRY DURING WINTER?

Generally, every individual observes that their skin drys up during the days having temperatures very low than the normal temperatures. hence winter season witnesses the more skin dry up cases than in any season.

Basing on the information one thing we got to know here is that there is some relation between our skin and cool temperatures outside in winter.

what relation could it be?

Skin is an organ just like any other part of the body .skin is made up of cells and the cells are made up of water.

During winter the atmosphere temperatures are way more below than the normal temperature.

Due to this low atmospheric temperatures, the humidity (the amount of water vapor present in the air )in the atmosphere falls .which means there is more amount of dry air than the wet air in the atmosphere

The image shows how the humidity varies with the change in temperature.

This fall in humidity levels in the atmosphere creates a sort of imbalance of water vapor in the atmosphere.

In-universe nature always tries to maintain the balance for the smooth functioning of each and every aspect hence atmosphere also does the same.

In order, the maintain the humidity balance in the atmosphere .it draws water vapor through water resources present on the earth's surface which also includes our skin.

So the dry air in the atmosphere draws the water vapor through the skin causing skin dryness.

In my observation, the relation between our skin and atmosphere might be

skin dryness is inversely proportional to the atmospheric humidity(absolute humidity)

Skin Dryness ∝ 1/atmospheric humidity(absolute humidity)

which means if absolute humidity falls low the skin dryness increases and vice-versa

That’s why we don’t observe any sort of dryness on the skin during the summer season where the absolute humidity is pretty high.

Whereas in winter the scenario is quite opposite the skin drys up more as the absolute humidity falls.

There are certain factors for skin dryness during winter which as follows:

  • Sudden exposure to sunlight when the cold dry air is warmed up by the sunlight during the morning would cause more skin dryness.
  • Exposure to the cold and dry winds would cause skin dryness.
  • Use of hot water baths or continuous heating blowers strips of water vapor causing dryness.

Technically, this process replicates the drying process in chemical engineering

So in another way around I can say that the drying rate of the skin during winter is high compare to the drying rate of the skin during other seasons.

The remedies to protect your skin during winter

  • Avoid direct exposure of skin to sunlight or cold dry winds.
  • Use a moisturizer or skin lotions before going to bed
  • Always bath with mild-warm water
  • Hydrate yourself
