By the looks of it, things were pretty wild at this weekend’s annual Comic Con International in San Diego. Packed with everything that makes a Comic Con great it sounds like this year’s event was one to remember! Franchises this year included (to name a few):

  • Game of Thrones
  • Star Wars
  • The Green Lantern
  • Justice League
  • WonderWoman

Panels, workshops, book signings, VR experiences and, of course the iconic Cosplay Craze, which this year packed everything ranging from pink wookies to the obligatory “Princess Leia’s Golden Bikini”. If there’s any Friends or Star Wars fans out there — you’re welcome.

Suicide Squad VR Experience.

Now — let’s get to the meat and potatoes of what we do. At the event which ended yesterday, attendees also had the opportunity to get an exclusive first look at the some of the Suicide Squad footage in gorgeous 360° video. The Suicide Squad 360 Experience is a way of bringing you the viewer into the realm of our ex-incarcerated super villains. Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc and the rest of the team were all part of this.

The DC team had set up several stalls where rigs were made available for anyone who’d want to have a look and see what the Suicide Squad Experience was all about. If you were one of the fortunate few who got to witness it — good on you! We couldn’t make it unfortunately.

A customized rig is attached to the stunt crew prior to recording the experience.

While the concepts and practical aspects of the movie was being planned out in the background, the stunt and action crew were busy training and preparing for the action-packed fighting scenes they were to star in. Masquerading as our beloved anti-heroes of DC, they would train hard at packing punches as the iconic villains of the franchise. However, two days before the shootings the stunt team were asked: “Hey guys, can you do it wearing this thing too?”.

That “thing” was a specially crafted VR rig, built under the supervision of the Suicide Squad VR Coordinator Harisson Norris, the son of Guy Norris, the second director of the movie. What initially started out as a: “Hey, you know what could be cool?” ended up as a spontaneous success.

For those of you who haven’t tried out a 360° experience before, and are curious whether or not it’s something for you — VR Today Magazine frequently feature these in the VR Experience section of our site. Have a look at one of our most recent ones here. In the meantime, in regard to the movie, here’s a quote from Andy Horwitz from the Suicide Squad team:

“It is a fully immersive experience where you are in the scene of the movie, during one of the most intense action sequences of the movie editing”
- Andy Horwitz, Co-Producer, Suicide Squad
