VRidge in action

Let’s talk about VRRidge and streaming awesome top-tier content and games from your PC straight to your smartphone-powered Google Cardboard device!

So — you have been keeping half an eye on some of the latest innovations in Virtual Reality Technology. You have been cheering on the sidelines here at VR Today Magazine, IGN, Wired and similar sites. Now you want to give it a try yourself and there’s only one thing holding you back from giving it a try — the price tag. Virtual Reality headsets are expensive, and that’s no ill on the manufacturers who at the moment are changing the world one step at the time.

If that’s the way you feel, then you are not alone. Thousands of fans and hobbyists around the world are every day picking up a serious case of VR-fever, but having their hands tied for financial reasons. Well, today we’re presenting you with some exciting news to change that fact.

A Poland-based startup under the name of Riftcat has made it possible for those of us with a Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR or similar device to stream the Virtual Reality content and games directly to your phone and cardboard device. What this means is that if you are one of those casual gamers out there who have a VR-ready computer somewhere, you can now take Virtual Reality for a spin at only a fraction of the price.

Riftcat is not the only provider of this tech though. Similar ideas has been seen before by the likes of Trinus VR but Riftcat claims they have a “complete runtime replacement” for VR titles which is very exciting.

With such a heavy amount of pros from the one and same newsflash, we do have some cons to outline as well:

  • We have to mention straight off the bat that while the experience won’t be anything near what you can expect from a beautifully crafted, QLED-based, FOV’tastic VR headset, it definitely lowers the bar for entry by a lightyear for the curious enthusiast.
  • VRidge might have some latency issues causing the experience to get nudged down a couple of frames from the original experience. This of course, is at the leisure of your PC and it’s hardware.
