On Wednesday, November 28th — a few hours before our planned maintenance — we noticed an increase in disconnects from the VRChat service. Upon investigation, we learned that these disconnects were due to DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks against one of our network technology partners, specifically targeting VRChat. We began building a solution immediately. On November 30th, we were able to begin attack mitigation with those partners. This required several days to adapt and take effect.

During the process of mitigation there was a server misconfiguration that produced authentication errors. Due to the ongoing attacks, it was difficult to identify separate issues from the attacks. We believe the misconfiguration has now been rectified.

We apologize for the frustration and inconvenience this has caused our community. We know that this is unacceptable. We’ve put policies in place and have taken steps to get these problems resolved quicker in the future or mitigate them completely.
