A street vendor vs a luxury car. Scene captured in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Luxury cars’ sales in Vietnam have been soaring over the past decade, due to the rise of “nouveaux riches” (new rich), in a booming consumption society.

The paradox is that there is a huge number of street vendors, mostly peasants moving from rural areas to sell food, fruits, household goods in every corner of major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city.

Street vending — often associated with backwardness, disorder and poverty — seems to be on the rise again recently, in contrast with modern cityscapes and luxury lifestyle of the rich who are getting richer.

According to recent reports and research findings, the income gap between the richest and poorest Vietnamese people is very large. The richest Vietnamese has the daily income higher than the 10 year-income of the poorest.
