Pop is probably the most encompassing genre of music, branching out into dozens of different subgenres. However, not everything popular is pop music. Rock music was prominent throughout the 60s-90s, even though there were changes in popularity between the subgenres themselves. Dance music also changed, from the immense popularity of disco in the 60s, to the dominance of electronic/dance-pop as new technologies transform recording techniques. In fact, pop and rock themselves did not completely diverge until the late 60s/early 70s. As time goes on, music has developed into even more subgenres, whose boundaries are not always easy to pinpoint.

All the songs on this list fits the colloquial meaning of “pop,” but not all of them are actually pop music. These songs borrow elements of pop, but still leaning more towards another genre, may it be alt-rock, post-dubstep, soul, or folk.
