3 Reasons to Watch ‘Borat 2’
The Kazak buffoon vs. America. Round two.
I’m a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen’s satires. As an English man, he built his career on mocking America. It’s something that he kept relevant even after nearly two decades of his brilliant TV series, Da Ali G Show. Today, his approach is not as scandalous and inventive as once was, back in the early 2000s, but it still works.
Yet, I always considered Borat as one of his weaker characters (Brüno is the ultimate worst). The stupid Kazak man was funny in short segments in the TV show, but not so much as a full-length feature.
Nonetheless, Borat earned a mass of fans over the years. When it came out in 2006, being a shark of political incorrectness was a bold move. In 2020, it’s much harder to pull off shock value because it doesn’t stand out as much as it did fourteen years ago. But, in 2018, Cohen managed to nail it again with Who is America?. Over the years, taking a look at a country through the lens of outrageously offensive characters became a proven method for him.
I watched Borat 2 despite my opinion that the character is far from Cohen’s best alter egos. Yet, surprisingly, I had a good time.
Here is why.
