We’ve touched on the potential for technology to alter the physicality of humans and how it’s been a focus of research for some time. We also considered how virtual technology has a tremendous role to play in faster recovery, more sophisticated rehabilitation or more individualized care in chronic physical conditions or injuries.

With those in mind, it’s also very promising to consider how technology could help those who are underprivileged or disadvantaged due to socio-economic issues. VR in schools within low-income communities is particularly important.

They could provide the platform for children to learn and discover in environments that may have been impossible to experience before.

Experiential Learning Matters

Though book learning and experiential learning are equally important, educators often find that experiential lessons help students retain information faster and more accurately.

VR could provide a means for students to physically carry out tasks learned in a book or be exposed to other cultures and environments that would been inaccessible. These lessons are invaluable to a young and developing mind.

With companies like Facebook donating VR headsets to schools, the possibility of children to have access to an entirely different environment and form of education is definitely within reach.

Bridging the Generation Gap

Those of older generations often feel isolated and restricted due to physical difficulties or ill health. With the power of technology, these issues need not be as problematic. VR could offer people the opportunity to ‘visit’ places they may have never had a chance to.

Reconstructions of memory could even be possible in the future with the use of advanced AI algorithms (though the technology is still very young). There’s the possibility of re-experiencing a memory through a VR simulation, providing ample nostalgia and perhaps improving mental health.

VR and AR Can Empower

The opportunity that technologies like VR and AR can offer are limitless. Both have promise in providing people with a means to enjoy sensations and experiences that they otherwise may not have had access to.

It’s so important to remember and work towards advancements in progressive technology that provide a way for everyone to enter a level playing field, where restrictions are a thing of the past and everyone has access to the marvels of the world.
