Employee Motivation — Two Sides of Motivation
Don’t motivate your employees. They already are. We need to unleash their motivation.
According to Kerry Goyette:
Motivation is the drive to seek pleasure or avoid pain.
So there are 2 sides of Motivation in people:
1. Pleasure Side: These type of people are motivated to derive pleasure from everything they do. People on this type are optimistic about everything and they try to get everything best in their life, be it job profile or seeking the best life partner. This type of people can work on any type of project well as they are ambitious and optimistic.
2. Pain Side — People of this type tend to avoid any pain in life. They are good at noticing everything that can go wrong. They can help organizations find what can go wrong and avoid losses in future.
One type is of the mix of the above two where one side will dominate
Organizations can leverage this knowledge to improve their talent hiring and job-fitment. For any role, we can identify which type of motivation is required from the above two for the position that we are hiring for and hire the candidate accordingly.
Resume alone is not enough as it only tells what a candidate can do but not what the candidate will do.
