We’re taking a break from our regular game development-orientated articles to sit back and enjoy the 1st of May, known to the majority of our European followers as May Day.
In many parts of the world, the most commonly understood theme for May Day celebrations is that it is the International Workers day. However, did you know that celebrations on the 1st of May have been traced back to the Roman era? This was the Floralia festival, held in honor of the Roman goddess of flowers, Flora, from the 28th of April, lasting until the 3rd of May.
It was not just the Romans that had some sort of celebration during this time, in fact, many civilizations that existed during that time, and after, had some sort of festival. The themes of these festivals would range from welcoming spring and the renewal of life that comes with it, to lighting bonfires with the purpose of warding off evil spirits and witches, and in some parts of the world, Walpurgis Night is observed instead of May Day.
With such a rich history and a big focus on spring, it shouldn’t be a surprise to know that the Ernacks also have a festival that is in line with the traditional May Day celebrations. During this time, the Ernacks can be found bonding by baking cakes that they then share with their fellow Ernacks. The Raken are also involved, getting a special treat of their favorite forest forged fruits!
