Imagine that if an elephant combines with a man, what would he looks like? In the 19th century at England, there was a man, Joseph Merrick, called The Elephant Man. Joseph was suffering from Proteus Syndrome, which is a kind of genetic rare diseases and it will cause overgrowth of skin & bone.

Joseph Merrick has a very big head with enormous bags of skin, not much hair, and his right hand like a man’s foot, in contrast, his left hand is very beautiful like young woman’s. His legs are too heavy to walk well.

Joseph was working in a circus in his early life. He was treated as an animals and locked in a cellar. People could take a look of what they called The Elephant Man merely with 2 pence. One day, a doctor named Frederick came and gave a lot of money to bring Joseph back to his hospital. Dr. Frederick wanted to help him and find a cure. He treated Joseph very as his best friend, even built a small house for him. After that, Joseph became happier, even though he can’t smile and lots of people came to invited him. Soon after, Joseph became very famous because he is very kind, polite. He did many things that he dreamed about like a normal man. Sadly, he has been found dead on his bed. He broke his neck because he wanted to sleep as a normal man.
