John used to be covered under his employer’s health insurance. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, he lost his employment and stopped receiving health insurance. Without coverage, he couldn’t treat any of his health conditions and get the medication he needed. This brought on worries about how other health issues could happen at any time.

John’s hopes of returning to his previous job didn’t pan out. When he visited the Korean Women’s Association (KWA), a staff member helped him apply for Apple Health (Medicaid) coverage for the first time. The KWA is a Lead organization for the Health Benefit Exchange. Learn more about KWA at kwacares.org.

Applying for and receiving Apple Health coverage is one of the best things John has done for himself in the past year. “Just being able to know that medication is covered, it’s been a godsend, especially after losing my job and not having steady income.”

With Apple Health, John continues to receive the medications he needs

Knowing that his medications are covered helps John pursue meaningful hobbies he enjoys, like video editing and cooking, that bring more joy to his day-to-day life. He shared that having Apple Health coverage helps him enjoy daily tasks since it’s easier for him to maintain his blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Without medical coverage, John wouldn’t have as much time to do the activities he loves.

When his glasses broke, he called Apple Health customer service and received a list of places to get a replacement pair at a discount. John was able to get a new pair from an optometrist right down the street from where he lived. He was also able to receive a new hearing aid when the need arose. Having health insurance helped John find a primary care provider he can visit regularly to maintain his health, get referrals, and necessary evaluations.

Apple Health also covered John’s other medical needs, such as colonoscopies, treating a hernia, hearing evaluations, and blood draws. Reflecting on his experience with Apple Health, he said, “I’ve been able to take care of health things I’ve been putting off for a long time.”
