We welcome submissions that reflect the mindset of a “wabi-sabi journey” — articles that describe a personal experience, provoke a shift in reader attitudes or assumptions, or offer alternative ways to engage with a place, people or culture. These journeys are often pieces of a larger trip, or a reflection on an unanticipated take-away.

Travel writing, for those of us who are travel journalists, has shifted in the last decade to more “checklists” and “Top 10 Things You Must Do in _______.”

Writing to meet those requirements can feel like scripting a series of selfies: there is a picture, but how did it feel, taste, smell, sound? What made it worth a memory?

Just as we cannot easily define “wabi-sabi,” we leave it to you to decide which of your writing feels “wabi-sabi” to you.

If you have not read the opening article that describes a Wabi-Sabi journey, we suggest you do that first.

How to Submit

Writers can submit by doing the following:

  1. Email the head writer, Susan Kraus (susanjkraus58@gmail.com), a copy of your article with “Wabi-Sabi Journeys Submission” in the subject line. Please conform to Medium guidelines as far as appropriate content and language.
  2. Wait for our response that approves your story, and look for a Medium notification that you’ve been added as a writer. Since we may be out-of-the-office on a journey, please be patient if no immediate response.
  3. Submit your draft with tags to the publication.

Be sure to include in the email:

1) a link to your Medium profile so that we can add you as a writer later.

2) any pictures that fit your piece, but you must state whether they were taken by you or are public domain. If you have no pics, no problem, just request that we find a picture for the piece.

4) a brief bio, links to your own websites or blogs, and how readers can reach you (if you want to make that info public.) Tell us if you do not want your e-mail included.

For questions about protocol, email publication manager/editor Ashley Honey at contactashlynnlee@gmail.com.

We look forward to hearing all the stories you have to tell about your own wabi-sabi journeys!
