Elon Musk said his next robot will be cheaper than a Tesla so everyone can buy one

Elon Musk has revealed the tentative price of Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus. The tycoon said he aims to sell it for half the price of a car, although this will not be immediate. Musk hinted that the price of the robot will decrease over time, making it an affordable product for consumers.

The price of the Tesla Optimus was mentioned in an X (Twitter) interaction. Sam Korus, director of research, autonomous technology and robotics at ARK Invest, asked whether the production ramp of a humanoid robot would exceed that of a vehicle by as much as 10 times. «It seems like the limitation will be software capability, not manufacturing capability,» he said.

Elon Musk responded by saying that the complexity per unit mass is much higher with humanoid robots, although he believes it will cost less than half the cost of a car. Musk went into more detail in another response, confirming that the price of the Optimus would be between $25,000 and $30,000. «It will be lower over time,» Musk said.

The figure is in line with statements by Elon Musk, who said the humanoid robot is designed to be a mass-market product. Tesla presented several prototypes of Optimus during AI Day 2022, where it showed off some of its abilities and talked about its price. According to Elon, Tesla can manufacture millions of Optimus units thanks to the experience gained from electric cars. The robot could cost less than $20,000.

Tesla Optimus to compete with other humanoid robots

Although the price of the Optimus has been mentioned for some time, humanoid robots have become a trend in recent days, thanks to Figure 1. The robot, powered by OpenAI’s artificial intelligence, can engage in real-time conversation and learns on the fly. Like the Tesla variant, Figure 01 is designed to be integrated into the production line.

Another competitor to the Tesla Optimus will be Apollo, a friendly-looking biped created by Apptronik that will support Mercedes-Benz workers. The carmaker signed an agreement with its creators to integrate the robot into one of its factories. According to the report, Apollo will deliver containers and assembly parts to the production line.

All these robots share a mission: to perform unsafe or undesirable jobs in order to make humans happier. In the case of Optimus, the tycoon believes it will multiply countries’ productivity and help eradicate poverty.

Elon Musk is also considering launching catgirl-themed sex robots. In an interview with the head of TED, Musk said that by 2050, there will be robots in most homes, and some of them will play the role of romantic or sexual partners. Although we are still a long way from that scenario, the development of Optimus is progressing by leaps and bounds.

A few months ago, Tesla demonstrated the capabilities of its humanoid robot to calibrate its limbs. Optimus not only identifies objects and sorts them by category, but can also perform yoga poses. The latter demonstrates its balance and perception characteristics, two key functions it needs to master before it can integrate into a human-dominated environment.
