We all know different types of writing exist. But those who do creative writing or blogs/newsletters often forget about another form.

Technical writing.

And with more informative writing comes an aspect we must watch out for.

Jargon.

What is Jargon?

For those who don’t know, jargon refers to the fancy terms you see in academic and technical writing. The ones that make you scratch your head trying to decipher their meaning.

And while writing has its own jargon, if you can call it that, they’re pretty easy to figure out through context.

I can’t say the same for other jargon, though.

When to Use It

Obviously, you’ll want to use it for more technical and academic writing. For those who are already familiar with the jargon.

You’ll also want to use it for manuals and anything instruction-based. The people reading those already know the terms or are actively learning them for their job.

When Not to Use It

When your audience has no background in whatever information you’re trying to teach. Jargon can confuse and frustrate people, leaving them less…
