Music.

We listen to it all the time. In shows and movies, on the radio as we drive to and from work, and in stores as we shop for our goods.

But what about writing? Should writers listen to it while drafting their stories? And if so, what type of music?

Why Listen to Music While Writing?

There are many reasons to listen to music while writing, such as:

To Block Out Other Noise

Many of us don’t write in a silent space, either because we write outside of home or don’t have a dedicated room to write in (like me). And the noise from people and the environment can become distracting fast.

To Help You Focus

Some of us need the background noise to focus. And music activates all areas of the brain.

To Set a Mood

If you’re writing a story with a specific theme, listening to corresponding music can get your mind ready to write.
