“Wake up babe”

A grunt comes from under the covers in response.

“Wake up, I need you”

Silence. A snore, a shuffle in the bed.

“ WAKE UP — I’M IN LABOUR”

It was like firing a bullet.

Darling husband sat bolt upright. He looked at me with wide, sleep-glazed eyes.

“Now? But it’s only 4 am!”

He was right, it was early, for everything.

It was early labour, was early in the morning and was too early to do anything or go anywhere, but when your baby and your body says ‘It's showtime’ you take notice — however early.

Eight hours later, my Mum and 14-year-old brother came to see me, still at home, still in labour. Darling husband had gone to work, with instructions to ‘Call the office if anything happens.’ Right, I’ll just get on with it then!

I was craving ice cream.

Specifically. Raspberry Ripple flavour from our local ice cream makers, which was about a quarter of a mile away.
