If you’re like me…

  • Reading Medium articles
  • Engaging on social media
  • Hanging out with friends IRL

You probably know what it’s like to both feel great after a compliment & horrible after someone purposely ignored you.

The thing is, you don’t have to feel bad. Instead, you need to distill the people who are there for you and people who are there, well, just to be there.

Now try being a chemist for a second.

By mixing & matching ingredients, you’re able to concoct a formula that — while it may not always be according to a recipe, it’s your own secret sauce that you’re able to try out with another formula.

After mixing one formula in with the next, the result is *POOF*.

You just burnt down your laboratory.

Yet, you realized something your chemist professor taught you, “Distill… find the essence.”

So you sigh, remake the formula, and put it through a mechanism that separates certain parts of the formula into its basic form.

Taking the formula to your other solution, you mix the two and — what do you know? They worked!

The result was a cohesive solution that didn’t blow up in your face.

I might not be a chemist to know the exact steps for this, but can you see some connections that compare to your friendships?

We may be on the look-out, or maybe we keep in contact with certain people to talk about our normal everyday life with. We may try everything we can to keep them or talk to everyone we know — desperate to keep connections, but in the end we either grow apart with them, or worse, get into a bad situation.

Now talking personally here, instead of talking to everyone & trying to keep them all my friends, why don’t I take a step back to distill the essence of why I have these friendships?

If someone gives me a rude response on X or a person on Discord makes me feel like having to prove myself, they aren’t good to have around, right?

There’s over 8 billion people on Earth after all, I’m sure that both myself & you can find a group of people who purely reflect our own morals & goals (or whatever you appreciate in a friend).

There’s always a time & place for friendships.
